The old church of St. Jacob

This is the first church built in Međugorje. The building was completed in 1897 and dedicated to St. Jacob the elder. Due to the unstable soil under the church, after about thirty years the building was seriously damaged, so it was considered to start building a new church in another place, which was done in 1934. Later, due to dilapidation, the old church was rarely used, and in 1978 it was completely demolished. Today, the foundations of the old church and the outdoor votive altar built in 1934 are located on this site.
