Stjepan grad fortress

Stjepan grad - A building from the Middle Ages - Stjepan grad was erected over a Late Antique fortress located above Blagaj and was one of the most important towns in Herzegovina. This Herzog's town was actually a town palace surrounded by the heavy walls with jagged protective stonework at top which can still be seen. It was the seat of Stjepan Vukšić Kosača and thus came to be named Stjepan grad after him. The town itself was the centre of political and military turmoil in Herzog's land until 1473 when it was conquered by the Ottoman army when it became the seat and residence of qadi (Islamic civil judge).
